Below are three generations of the Zimmerly clan. In my database I have more generations than this, but most of those people are still alive and therefore I will not post them on this blog. However, I would like to find more of my Zimmerly cousins. If you are descended from these people, please send me an E-mail with details on how you are related. Zimmerly Family Marriages in Socorro newspapers

In the early 1900s, four of Samuel Zimmerly and Maria Pabla Torres' children were married. All four were announced in Socorro newspapers. Although Samuel Zimmerly was not alive to see any of his children marry, his wife, Pabla (Torres) Zimmerly attended each of her children's weddings.

Two announcements are not shown here: those for Juan Jose Zimmerly and Maria Gertrudis Zimmerly. Both were married before the turn of the century.

The March 3, 1900 issue of "The Chieftain" had this notice:

Married, at the Catholic church of this city on Monday, February 26, Ricardo M. Zimmerly and
Miss Eloise Stackpole, both of Socorro. There was a large attendance at the reception which followed the wedding ceremony, also at the ball in the evening. The happy couple were the recipients of many presents from friends who thus expressed their good wishes. 

The March 29, 1902 issue of "The Socorro Chieftain" had an announcement for Ricardo Abeyta and Maria Dolores (a.k.a."Lola") Zimmerly.  

 Prospective Wedding.

It is announced that Ricardo Abeyta, nominee for city treasurer, will on Monday lead to the matrimonial altar Miss Lola Zimmerly, also of this city. The happy pair will start upon their journey of married life with the good wishes of a large circle of relatives and friends.

In the same issue "The Socorro Chieftain" published a slate of Republican Party candidates. Ricardo Abeyta is listed as the candidate for City Treasurer. Ricardo's brothers Seferino and Abran are also on the slate, running for the Board of Education and Alderman respectively.

 

The April 5, 1902 issue had an announcement about one couple that attended to the wedding:

Mr. and Mrs. Victor Sais of Casa Colorada were in the city Monday to attend the Abeyta-Zimmerly
nuptials

The June 2, 1906 issue had an announcement of the Miera/Zimmerly wedding. The wedding reception occurred at the house of the bride's mother.

On last Monday young Estanislao Miera from San Antonio surrendered his heart to beautiful Miss Teresita Zimmerly of this town, being united in the holy bonds of wedlock by Rev. Ph. Martin at Saint Michael's church. After a bountiful repast at Mrs. Zimmerly's, with many relatives and friends, the happy couple left for San Antonio where they will make their future home.

Lastly, on April 18, 1908, the newspaper had this announcement for my great-grandparent's wedding:

Zimmerly Torres.
There will be a notable wedding in Socorro next Wednesday morning. invitations as follows: "Yourself and family are respectfully invited to attend the wedding of our children, Delfina Torres and Estevan Zimmerly, which will be celebrated the 22nd of April, A. D. 1908, 7 a.m. at the
Catholic church of San Miguel in Socorro, N. M., and from there to a refreshment at the house of J. E. Torres, and the same night to ball which will be given at the Garcia opera house.

A Productive Zimmerly Family Genealogical Meeting

Today I met with a third cousin of mine, B. Mares, at the Special Collection Library in Albuquerque. She is the daughter of Justin Zimmerly, who was a grandson of Juan Jose Zimmerly. Juan Jose was the oldest son of Samuel and Paubla (Torres) Zimmerly. She found me through a posting that I made on this site about her father.

It was a very productive meeting. We both had items to share with each other. I showed her photos of my great-grandfather Estevan Zimmerly from my website, which included one from his wedding day. I also shared a descendancy chart of Samuel and Paubla (Torres) Zimmerly and an ahnentafel table of Paubla (Torres) Zimmerly. However, B. Mares shared with me some stuff that was really good.

Since Mrs. Mares is a descendant of Juan Jose Zimmerly, she has access to some important family artifacts. When Samuel Zimmerly died, Juan Jose and his mother took over running the family grist mill. B. Mares had a ledger that was used in the business. Entries in the ledger include names of Socorro residents. Also, at the back of the book someone recorded the births of selected family members. B. asked me if I thought those birth records were reliable. I told her that although these were not primary documents, the fact that these births appeared to have been recorded soon after the actual events made them somewhat reliable. I mentioned that she should still try to verify the information elsewhere, but that it would be okay to use it for her initial research.

B. said that in the future she would allow me to copy pages from the ledger. I will try to post those pages on this blog once I copy them.

B. also shared with me a number of documents. She showed me a photo of her great grandfather Juan Jose. We compare his photo with a photo of his brother Estevan. There was a definate family resemblance. She also allowed me to copy my great-grandfather Estevan's baptismal record. Although I probably have the document somewhere, it was nice to have it immediately so that I could post it on this blog.

Other items included:

* an 1860 California census that appears to show Samuel Zimmerly in Visalia, California.
* a corrido (funeral song) written for one of Juan Jose's sons Eduardo Zimmerly who died when he was a teenager.
* a death certificate for Flora (Zimmerly) Salazar.
* an ancestry chart that shows B.'s ancestry.
* a family group record that shows the children of Samuel T. Zimmerly, son of Juan Jose and grandfather of B. Mares.
* she also mentioned that her family has certain artifacts such as Samuel James Zimmerly's Knights of Pythias sword and scales that were used in the grist mill. I asked her to have photos taken of those objects so that I may post them on this blog.

I will share some of these items in this blog.

The Zimmerly family registers for the World War I draft

Of the three sons of Samuel and Paubla (Torres) Zimmerly, two of them registered for the World War I draft - Ricardo and Estevan Zimmerly. A son of the oldest brother, Juan Jose Zimmerly, also registered - Sam Zimmerly.

From these records, I've gleened the following information:

Ricardo Maximiano Zimmerly, born 6 May 1878, was the Socorro County Assessor on September 12, 1918. He was White and born in the United States. He lived in Socorro, New Mexico. His wife was Lizzie Stackpole Zimmerly. He was of a tall and slender build. He had no physical impairments.

Ricardo's brother Stephen Zimmerly (my great-grandfather) was born on 3 October 1887 in Socorro, N.M. USA where he also resided. On 5 June 1917 he was a deputy assessor under his brother Ricardo. He had a wife and 4 childrren at this time. He did not claim an exemption from the draft. He was a caucasion of medium height and slender built. He had brown eyes and hair, and was not bald. He had no physical disability. He signed his draft card under his spanish name Estevan Zimmerly.

Ricardo and Stephen's nephew Sam Zimmerly was born on 21 January 1889 in Socoro, New Mex. USA. He lived in this same town. He was a self-employed farmer. His dependants included his wife, child and brothers. He claimed an exemption because of his dependants. He was cacausion of medium height and slender build. He had brown eyes and hair and was not bald. He was not disabled. He signed his draft card on 5 June 1917.

As far as I know, none of these men actually served during the war.

Samuel C. Meek

Samuel C. Meek served in the same Regiment as my 2nd great grandfather Samuel Zimmerly, but in a different company: 1st Regiment of California Infantry, Company G. I'm not exactly sure who Meek was, but I believe he was involved in the political history of Socorro. I know that he had a street named after him in Socorro: Meek St.

I discovered an affadavit with his signature in the widow's pension of my 2nd great grandmother Paubla (Torres) Zimmerly. I find it interesting because 1.) it shows that Zimmerly had some contact with his old Civil War buddies, and 2.) that it gives a brief descriptions of Meek's and Zimmerly's movements after being discharged. The only thing that confuses me is that Meek says that he knew Zimmerly since August 1861 until the day of Zimmerly's death. This would be true only if he knew Zimmerly before Zimmerly enlisted. Zimmerly enlisted on October 9, 1861. Meek may be mistaken, or maybe they did know each other before October. It's worth looking into.

In the matter of Mrs. Paula Zimmerly Widow of Samuel Zimmerly late a ___ in Co. B of the 1” Reg’t of Cal. Infr. Vols., for Widows Pension.

On this ___ day of January, A.D. 1892, personally appeared before me a ___ in and for the aforesaid County, duly authorized to administer oaths, Samuel C. Meek, aged 55 years, a resident of Socorro, in the County of Socorro and State Terry. of New Mexico whose Postoffice address is Socorro, Socorro County, N.M. and well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, declared in relations to the aforesaid case as follows:

(Note: Affiant should state his means of knowing the facts which he testifies.)

I knew Samuel Zimmerly from August 1861 until the day of his death, having served Three years in The same Regiment with him, to August 31st 1864. I reenlisted, and he came to Socorro, and I was at Los Pinos New Mex. working as Pack Saddler in September 1866 when he was married. I came to Socorro on the 6th day of January 1867 to live, and we lived as citizens of the town of Socorro until his death occurred on the 20th day of November AD 1887. I know That when I first knew him, he was not married, nor did not marry until Sept 29th 1866 when he was married to Miss Paula Torres, a maid, and daughter of Ricardo Torres & wife Gertrude Padilla de Torres.

affiant further declare (sic) that he has no interest in said case and is not concerned in its prosecution.

Zimmerly Civil War Pension Records

Yesterday, I received in the mail Civil War pension records for my 2nd great grandfather Samuel Zimmerly and his widow Paula Zimmerly de Torres. What can be found in these documents:

* Samuel Zimmerly declared that he was an invalid due to rheumatism contacted while in the army. He claimed to have been exposed to "damp, wet weather."

* Samuel was working as a carpenter while living in Socorro, New Mexico.

* There are two documents that include Samuel's signature.

* A couple of the documents include Paula's mark (apparently she could not write.)

* Certain affadavits include statements and signatures by prominent Socorro residents such as Samuel Meek and Luis Maria Baca.

* One record includes a list of items and value of Paula's property.

* Handwritten copies of Samuel and Paula's marriage record, as well as the baptismal records of four of their children: Maria Dolores, Estavan, Tereza and Ricardo Maximiano.

* A letter from the Socorro County Assessor Ricardo Zimmerly to the Pension Department announcing his mother's death on 23 July 1917.

... and a bunch of other stuff.

There is no new information about Samuel's family. The copy of the marriage record once again states that he was Swiss, and that he was the son of Santiago Zimmerly and Maria Schus.

Luis Maria Baca declared that as far as he knew, Samuel was not married before he married Paula Torres. But then again, he only knew Samuel since 1864.

I hope to write an article about Samuel Zimmerly soon. I'll probably publish it in the New Mexico Genealogist. Maybe I'll give the readers of this blog a sneak peak.

Charles E. Zimmerly found in 1930 Magdelena Census

1930 U.S. Census record showing Charles E. Zimmerly, son of Ricardo and Eloisa (Stackpole) Zimmerly

I was searching, page by page, the 1930 Magdelena, New Mexico Census records when I came across a record showing a Charles E. Zimmerly, lodger in the household of Lulu Gooding (?). I believe this is a son of Ricardo and Eloisa (Stackpole) Zimmerly, since the lodger is 24 years old in the 1930 census record. Charles Zimmerly was born 7 November 1905.(1) Later, he married Hilda Bateman(2), and he died on 17 November 1961(3).

Charles E. Zimmerly is shown as a telegrapher for Western Union. Other lodgers in the record include Ralph Clark, and Robert V. Boyle. (4)

Meeting Another Zimmerly Cousin

At the New Mexico Genealogical Society meeting on June 21st, I met up with another one of my Zimmerly cousins. I was expecting to meet a few people who were distantly related to me through the Baca family, since the talk was about the "Baca Families of Pena Blanca." My C. de Baca family was originally from there, and indeed the family that the speaker talked about was descended from Luis Maria Cabeza de Baca. However, there are many descendants of that family, and our relation was very distant.

I was speaking to another woman by the name of Lucille who wanted to know how to go about researching her family. She said that her family was originally from southern New mexico, so I asked her to give me some information about her grandparents. She told me that her grandparents were J. E. Miera and Teresa Zimmerly! I told her, "nice to meet you, cousin!"

At the time, I told her that we were first cousins, once removed, but now that I think about it, I was wrong. Her grandmother Teresa Zimmerly and my great-grandfather Esteban Zimmerly were siblings. That means that her great grandparents and my great great grandparents were the same, which actually makes her my second cousin, once removed. She and my mother were second cousins.

Lucille said that she was born in Socorro, but lived there for only a few years before her parents moved. She may have known my grandmother Paublita Baca, but she wasn't entirely sure.

I wrote out some information about the Zimmerly family for her, and I told her that I would mail her some more information. I printed up some information from this blog, including the short article about Samuel Zimmerly and Maria Paubla Torres, and the post about Samuel Zimmerly Living in Visala, California in 1860. I printed up a copy of her grandfather Jose E. Miera's World War I registration card, and printed an article from the Defensor Chieftain about "The Civil War in New Mexico". From my genealogy database, I printed a Descendant Report on Samuel Zimmerly and an Ahnenfatel of his wife Maria Paubla Torres. I'll also be sending her copies of certain documents such as Samuel & Paubla (Torres) Zimmerly's marriage record, and portions of Samuel Zimmerly's military records.

It's always good to finding relatives. That's why it's always good to attend genealogical society meetings.

Marriage Records for the Zimmerly Family

As I've mentioned before, I have a set of 2^nd great grandparents named Samuel and Maria Paubla (Torres) Zimmerly. They were the parents of six children, including my great-grandfather Estevan Zimmerly. Sadly, Samuel Zimmerly died before any of his children were married and had their own children. In fact, Samuel died just 40 days after my great-grandfather was born. However, Paubla was able to see all of her children marry, and the births or many, if not all, of her grandchildren.

Below, I have the marriage records of all six of the Zimmerly children. Interestingly enough, they were married in the same sequence as they were born.

All of these records can be found in Socorro Marriages, Archives of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe, FHL (Family History Library) Microfilm # 16997. I did my research at the Albuquerque Special Collections Library.

1. Juan Jose Zimmerle married Isabel Torres, the daughter of Eduardo Torres and Juliana Ortega, on 8 February 1888.

Looking for Zimmerly Family Pictures

This summer, I did a presentation for the New Mexico Genealogical Society on the Zimmerly family of Socorro, New Mexico. After the presentation, I promised a number of people that I would write an article about the info I presented. The problem is that I hadn't finished my research, (when do we EVER finish our research) and left out many of the citations in the manuscript that I used for the speech. Since then, I've been extremely busy and have not been able to finish the article.

Well, I hope to start it up again soon. Since the editor of the New Mexico Genealogist asked me to publish it in that journal, I will probably do that instead of distributing the article independently. What I would like, though, is to have photos to go with the article.

I have photos of my 2nd great-grandparents Samuel and Paubla (Torres) Zimmerly, and their youngest son Esteban and his wife Delfina (Torres) Zimmerly. What I would like is to do is get photos of Esteban's siblings and their spouses. Their names are:

* Juan Jose Zimmerly, born 14 January 1868, died 20 March 1916. Married Isabel Torres on 8 February 1888 in Socorro, New Mexico.

* Gertrudes Zimmerly, born 1 June 1871, died 6 September 1920. Married Herminio Torres on 1 Nobember 1889 in Socorro, New Mexico.

* Ricardo Zimmerly, born 6 May 1876. Married Eloisa Stackpole on 26 February 1900.

* Maria Dolores Zimmerly, born 3 March 1881, died 18 Sepember 1947. Married Ricardo Abeyta on 31 March 1902 in Socorro, New Mexico. She may have also been known as "Lola", since that is a common diminutive of "Dolores".

* Teresa Zimmerly, born 24 September 1884, died 7 October 1865. Married Jose Estanislado Miera on 28 May 1906 in Socorro, New Mexico.

Zimmerly Family Documents

The other day, I was at the Albuquerque Special Collections Library when I decided to look at a Zimmerly Family folder that I set up in 2008. I wanted to make sure that it was still there. It was. I set up the folder after doing a presentation at the library in July 2008.

Among the items I put in the folder, are the following:

* Civil War pension and military records of Samuel Zimmerly

* Samuel Zimmerly's obituary

* Church marriage records of all 6 children of Samuel and Paubla (Torres) Zimmerly

* A couple of genealogy charts

* A Zimmerly family history that was pubilshed in the El Defensor Chieftain in the 1960s

Over the past year and a half, I've put a few more documents in the folder. Also, someone else added some items, too. Although, I'm not quite sure what those documents had to do with the Zimmerly family. I left them there anyway in case there was a connection that I was missing.

Martin Hurtado, Alburquerque's First Mayor (Albuquerque Tricentennial)

This weekend is the Albuquerque 300th Birthday Bash. My wife Nancy and I are going to take part in the Founders Day Parade on Saturday April 22, 2006. Since Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez is supposedly a decedant of the first mayor of Alburquerque Martin Hurtado, I decided that I too should demonstrate my claim as a decendant of the first mayor.

I am decended from Martin Hurtado three times, all through my maternal grandmother Paublita (Zimmerly) Baca.

Samuel T. Zimmerly's World War I Draft Card

Below is a copy of Samuel T. Zimmerly's World War I draft card. Samuel T. Zimmerly was the son of Juan Jose Zimmerly and Isabel Torres. Samuel was married to Juanita Torres, the daughter of Candelario Torres and Gregoria Orinez.

The draft card display's the following information about Samuel Zimmerly:

* He was born on 21 January 1889 in Socorro, New Mexico, USA
* He was a natural born citizen
* He was a self-employed farmer
* His dependants included his wife, child and brother
* He believed that he should be exempted from the draft because of his dependants
* He was of medium height, slender build, had brown eyes and hair, was not balding, and was missing any appendages
* He signed his card

Samuel Zimmerly and Maria Paubla Torres

Samuel Zimmerly, son of Santiago (James?) Zimmerly and Maria Schus; married Maria Paubla Torres, daughter of Ricardo Torres and Maria Gertudes Padilla, on September 29, 1866 at San Miguel Parish, Socorro, New Mexico. On the marriage record, Samuel Zimmerly is mentioned as being from Switzerland.[1] However, according to his military records Samuel is listed as being born in Luzerne, Penn.[2]

Samuel Zimmerly was a member of Company B, 1st Regiment of the California Infantry. He enlisted on October 2, 1861 at Camp Latham, California, for a three year term. He was a carpenter at the time. He was 5’ 8” tall, had sandy hair and complexion, and “black” eyes. After completing his three year duty Samuel was discharged at Fort Craig, New Mexico on November 3, 1864.[3]

I found a web site that includes stories about my 2nd Great Grandfather Samuel Zimmerly and his wife Maria Paubla Torres. It is on the El Defensor chieftain website:

This history has some incorrect information. Samuel Zimmerly was from Switzerland, not Germany. There is no proof that he arrived in the United States with his family; he may have come here alone. The story is that he and his three brothers arrived in the United States and went their separate ways. This may be true, but I haven't found any information to back this up.

Also, since Samuel Zimmerly was born in Switzerland, his grandson Edward Zimmerly who was shot down during World War II in Germany didn't die near where his grandfather was born.

I'll post some information about the Zimmerlys on this site soon.

Samuel Zimmerly was my maternal grandmother Paublita (Zimmerly) Baca's paternal grandfather. Paublita Baca's father was Samuel's son Estevan, who was not mentioned in this article.

From this record, we know that Santiago Baca and Pauline Zimmerly were married on 13(?) February 1932. Their parents were, respectively, Rafael Baca and Josefita Padilla, and Steve Zimmerly and Adelfina Torres. The best man and matron of honor were J. Torres and Lucie Torres, who were probably a cousins of the bride.

Obituary: Sam Zimmerly

I went to the Special Collections Library yesterday, and found a wealth of information. I will share some of it with you today.

For a couple of hours, I searched micorfilm on Socorro, NM newspapers. In the "Local News" porition of the November 26, 1887 edition of the "Socorro Bullion", I found this short obituary of my great-great grandfather Samuel Zimmerly:

Sam Zimmerly, one of the earliest settlers of Socorro county, died at his home last Saturday evening. Mr. Zimmerly has resided in this city for a number of years, and during that time he has been activively engaged in the milling business. for sometime the disease which finally caused his death, has rendered him as invalid, and at times a great sufferer. He leaves a wife and six children to mourn his death, while a host of friends sympathize with the bereaved family.
