My father mentioned on another person's blog?

I believe that I found a blog post that mentions my dad, Robert Baca. On a post titled Strike Up the Band, the author mentions a "Bobby Baca" who apparently played coronet. My dad did indeed play the coronet and/or trumpet. Other items on the site indicate that the author is from Socorro, New Mexico, including names of some of the Zimmerly family. Remember, my maternal grandmother is a Zimmerly.

It would be interesting if this author knew my father. I hope he finds my post and we are able to connect via the internet.

Marriage Record: Juan Baca and Carolina Bourguignon

Document view.

Part of this record is difficult to read, but I was able to figure out the following facts:

1.) On 9 April 1900 at the San Miguel Parish in Socorro (New Mexico), Juan Baca, single, son of Martin Baca, deceased, and Rita Luna of Lemitar (New Mexico); married Carolina Bourguignon, single, daughter of Felipe Bourguignon, deceased, and Tomasa Gonzalez of Lemitar.

2.) A prenuptial investigation was performed on the couple, and it was discovered that they were related in the 3rd degree of consanguinity.

3.) The witnesses were Eliseo Sanchez and Clarita Garcia. The officiating priest was Philberto Martin.

A transcription of portions of this record can be found in the reference below. I used the transcription to help me decipher parts of the record.

Matrimonios San Miguel del Socorro, Our Lady of Sorrows de La Joya, San Marcial y San Ignacio y San Cristobal, (Hispanic Genealogical Research Center of New Mexico. Albuquerque, NM. 1999), p. 232.

Juan Baca and Carolina Bourguignon were indeed related in the 3rd degree of consanguinity. They were 2nd cousins. Below is a chart that I created to show their relationship (it was not in the original document) :

Jose Joaquin de Luna

father of

Francisco de Luna *** siblings *** Maria de Jesus de Luna

parents of

Maria Luna *** cousins *** Tomasa Gonzalez

parents of

Juan Baca *** 2nd cousins *** Carolina Bourguignon

Where to do research in Albuquerque

"...these are a few of my favorite places."

There are many fantastic places in New Mexico to do genealogy research. Here are some that can be found in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

* The University of New Mexico Zimmerman Library has many important New Mexico documents which are archived in the Center for Southwest Research and Special Collections. The Online Archive of New Mexico is a catalog of items archived there and in other state libraries. The general collection of Zimmerman Library also has many good books on New Mexico history and genealogy. Lastly, many online databases and journals may be accessed by anyone from any of the library's computers or from home by anyone with a UNM ID.

* The National Hispanic Cultural Center Library has a huge collection of books on Hispanic history and genealogy. One room of the library focuses on New Mexico genealogy.

* Family History Centers are libraries supported by the Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints (the Mormons.) There are Family History Centers all over the World. To find a center near you, click on this link. There are three Family History Centers in Albuquerque:

Here Today, Gone Tomorrow

A couple of years ago, I found a website that had Albuquerque burials from 1726 and 1776. I promptly printed the list - 46 pages - and filed it away. Today I was looking trhough my cabinet and found the lists. I decided that I would share the list on this blog so I put in the URL. It was gone! Just in case, I searched Google. It couldn't find it anywhere on the web.

If you are looking for these records off line, they are on LDS Roll # 0016645 - Archives of the Ardiocese of Santa Fe.

Delayed Birth Records: Socorro County, NM - 1867-1895

You can find the Delayed Certificates of Birth for Socorro County here. For whatever reason, certain persons in Socorro county retroactively applied for these certificates. Persons listed were born between 22 October 1867 to 14 Dec 1885. This list includes date and place of birth, and parents names.

Microfilm of the actual Delayed Birth Certificates can be found at the Special Collections Library in Albuquerque.

High School graduation - 21 years ago

Robert C. Baca and Robert J. Baca, San Miguel parking lot May 1986

This year, I finally received a BA in Education. I hope to be teaching social studies next year. UPDATE: I got a position at a Navajo school as an English teacher. Go figure!

However, 21 years ago I graduated from Socorro High School in Socorro New Mexico. The picture above is of me and my late father Robert C. Baca at a graduation ceremony held by the San Miguel Church in Socorro. Class of '86 rocks!

By the way, where did all my long dark hair go?
