Baptismal Record for Maria Andrea Trujillo

Today I found the baptismal record for my 2nd great-grandmother, Maria Andrea Trujillo*. She is my last ancestor to have been born in Mexico. Her family emigrated to Mexico from Socorro in the 1850s after the United States incorporated New Mexico as a territory after the Mexican American War. They didn't stay in Mexico for very long, however they were they were there long enough for Maria Andrea to have been born there. 

She is listed as Maria Albina, however I'm pretty certain that this is her record. Other records indicate that she was born on December 8, 1855, which is close to December 8, 1854. 

I used an AI program on Evernote to do a transcription of the document. I then personally reviewed the image to find mistakes in the transcription and made edits.

* I found a clue that directed me to the baptism in a Ancestry.com tree of my second cousin, once removed Maurine Pool. She is the woman who gave me information decades ago about my relatives Crespin Torres and Andreita Torres. She has done a lot of research into this Torres/Trujillo family that we share.

Santiago Torres and his family arrived in Socorro around 1820. His descendants make up one of the two Torres families of the community. This video profiles one of his descendants in particular, Jose Crespin Torres. 

Torres Family Photos

This weekend, I attended the funeral for my dad's cousin Joe Torres who passed away on July 1st. His nephew Leon shared with me a couple of photographs from the wedding of Val Torres, Joe's brother. Val was married in 1960.

The married couple in the center were Val, born Ignacio Torres after his grandfather, and his bride Elizabeth Ann McCoy. Right behind Val is his brother Joe Torres, the tall man with the sheepish grin and front "Superman" curl. The older woman to the right of Elizabeth is Andrea (Montoya) Torres, Val and Joe's paternal grandmother, and my great-grandmother. Next to her is Joe and Val's father and mother Jose M. Torres, Sr. and Tomasita (Rivera) Torres - Jose has his right hand on his wife's shoulder, and his left hand on the bride's mother Rachel McCoy. On the very far left, holding the baby girl, is Joe's wife, Lori. I'm not sure who the other people in the photo are. It does not appear that my grandparents attended this wedding, nor did my parents, uncles or aunts.

Speaking of Joe Torres, here are some photos from Joe's memorial yesterday. There were two photo displays with his pictures, a folded flag, and a letter from the president commemorating his passing. I'm not showing all of the photos because they included living relatives such as his young great-grandchildren. The funeral occurred on Friday. His son, one of his daughters, and I all gave eulogies. Joe wasn't just my cousin, but he and his son were my employers. Joe helped me out when I needed a part-time job when I was going back to college. He was a great guy.

My Grandmothers and Charlemagne

In the past few years, genealogists have discovered a link between the Montes Vigil family of New Mexico and Charlemagne, Holy Roman Emperor. If this link is accurate, it allows many New Mexicans to trace their ancestry back 40+ generations. In my case, I can trace both of my grandmother through that line. I have not found a link for either of my grandfathers.

I used a website called "Beyond Origins of New Mexicans Families" to connect my ancestry to Charlemagne. This website is very reliable, and I trust its conclusions. Click on the link below to read the genealogy that leading researchers have developed.

Ancestor Birthday Blog - Andrea Montoya - November 30, 1883

Welcome to my mini-blog within a blog – The Ancestor Birthday Blog. On this blog, I will be posting short vignettes on my ancestors on their birthdays. Today is the genealogy of my great-grandmother Andreita (Montoya) Torres.

My great-grandmother Juana Andrea Montoya was born on November 30, 1883 in the Socorro, New Mexico area. Her parents were Jose Casmiro Montoya and Manuela Abeyta. Andreita (as most people called her) was the granddaughter of Juan Tomas Montoya and Ana Maria Estefana Perea and Jose Albino Abeyta and Maria Miguela Sanchez. Among her ancestors was Jose Tomas Candelaria, the maternal grandfather of her grandfather Albino Abeyta. Jose Tomas Candelaria was listed as a genizaro in the 1790 Spanish census of Alburquerque. A genizaro was an Indian usually kidnapped as a child who was raised in a Spanish household as a servant, and sometimes as family. Jose Tomas would have received his freedom before he married his wife Ana Maria Gallegos. According to family lore, my great-grandmother claimed to be part Apache, which is a possibility since her 2^nd great-grandfather was Native American.

Andreita Montoya married two men. Her first husband was Miguel Marquez. She married him on August 18, 1900 in Socorro. He was the son of Jose Apoloniar Antonio Marquez and Juana Maria Bartola Lucero. Andreita and Miguel had one child: Manuelita Marquez. Her first husband would have died before she married her second husband.

Andreita’s second husband was my great-grandfather Ignacio Torres. Andreita and Ignacio married on August 25, 1906 in Socorro. They had four children who lived past their childhood: Jose Manuel (born 1907), Maria Teresa (1912), Margaret (1917) and Anastacio Torres (1920). Another child, Adelarda Torres (1909) shows up in the 1910 census of the family. It is unknown who this child is; she does not show up in any other records.

Andreita’s second husband Ignacio was the son of Jose Crespin Torres and Maria Andrea Trujillo. Ignacio was born on October 25, 1875 in Socorro. He died on March 15, 1950.

Andreita passed away on July 9, 1974. Although I was 5 years old going on 6 when she died, I for some reason do not remember her at all.

Descendants of Toribio Garcia Jurado

Andres Armijo, the author of "Por Constancia /So that it may be validated: Family History in the Rio Abajo", informed me recently that he is related to me. I already knew that we were related by marriage - his great uncle married my great aunt, and therefore we have mutual cousins. I also figured that we were related to each other in other ways. After all, we are both of New Mexico stock and we both come from the Rio Abajo. But even though I read his book, I didn't realize that he had information that showed that we are 7th cousins.

In his book, Andres indicated that he is the descended of Joseph Enrique Chaves, a soldier from Belen who enlisted in Isleta Pueblo in 1808. Joseph Enrique Chaves was the son of Santiago Chaves and Maria de la luz Garcia. Maria de la luz Garcia was the daughter of Toribio Garcia Jurado and Antonia Teresa Gutierrez. Based on my extrapolation of the information that he presented, Andres is the 6th great-grandson of Toribio and Antonia (see pages 102-104 of his book.) I, too, am the 6th great-grandson of Toribio and Antonia - three times - and their 7th great-grandson once.  That makes Andres and me 7th cousins and 7th cousins, once removed.

Andres' ancestors probably stayed in Belen for a few generations at least. My ancestors were the original (re) settlers of Socorro in 1815.

In my two articles in the September 2011 and March 2012 New Mexico Genealogist - "The Early Settlers of the Socorro Land Grant: An 1818 List (Parts I and II)", I mention two specific ancestors of mine who are the children of Toribio Garcia Jurado and Antonia Teresa Gutierrez. Francisco Xavier Garcia Jurado, married three times, was one of the instrumental founders of Socorro. In 1817 and 1818, he petitioned the governor to get title of the Socorro Land Grant for the settlers. He was listed in an 1818 list of Socorro residents who contributed goods to a military campaign against the Navajos. (Part I - page 117.) I am descended from Francisco Xavier's second wife Maria Josefa Sanchez, who was dead by 1816.  (New Mexico Roots, Volume 4, page 616.)

Francisco Xavier's sister Maria Trinidad Garcia Jurado arrived Socorro by 1818 with her husband Feliciano Montoya. Feliciano Montoya was listed on the 1818 list, which confirms that he was living in Socorro at the time. (Part II - page 12.)

Descendants of Francisco Xavier Garcia Jurado include my second great-grandmother Maria Guadalupe Padilla, who married my 2nd great-grandfather Jose Epitacio Torres. They were the parents of Delfina Torres, who married Estevan Zimmerly - my great-grandparents - my maternal grandmother's parents. Another descendant is Jose Crespin Torres, my 2nd great grandfather on my father's side, who married Maria Andrea Trujillo.

Descendants of Maria Trinidad Garcia Jurado include Maria Pabla Torres who married Samuel Zimmerly, who were the parents of the aforementioned Estevan Zimmerly (which means that Maria Pabla Torres and Maria Guadalupe Padilla were 3rd cousins, and their children - the married couple Estevan and Delfina were fourth cousins.) Also, my 3rd great-grandfather, Jose Valentine Torres, the father of the aforementioned Jose Epitacio Torres, was a great-grandson of Maria Trinidad. This means that Jose Epitacio Torres and his wife were 2nd cousins, once removed. Also Josefa Abeyta, Jose Epitacio Torres' first wife, was also a great-granddaughter of Maria Trinidad Garcia Jurado, which made this couple also second cousins. Luckily, I'm not descended from her, too.

The Garcia Jurado family is one of my favorite families, partially because I'm descended from them many times and also because they are just interesting people. I mean, just look at Ramon Garcia Jurado (Toribio's famther), Ramon's daughter Petronila Garcia Jurado (not mentioned here, but I wrote about her in the June 2014 New Mexico Genealogist) and his grandson Francisco Xavier Garcia Jurado. All of these people had colorful lives. You can read about them in articles that I've written and through books such as Origins of New Mexico Families (by Fray Angelico Chavez), The Spanish Recolonization of New Mexico (Esquibel and Colligan), and "Spanish Colonial Lives" (Tigges and Salazar.)

Antonio de Salazar - my 7th great grandfather - TWICE!

Henrietta Martinez Christmas posted the article below about my 7th great-grandfather Antonio de Salazar's estate.

Antonio de Salazar was one of the founders of Belen, New Mexico in 1740. He and his brother-in-law Captain Diego de Torres petitioned the Spanish crown (through New Mexico's governor) for the Belen land grant. The Henrietta's article details the settlement of Antonio de Salazar's estate.


Antonio de Salazar's sons Pedro de Salazar and Cristobal de Salazar, petitioned the government to settle their father's estate. According to them, the estate was to be divided into equal shares and given to Antonio's heirs. However, their brother-in-law Joaquin de Luna argued that Antonio de Salazar gave Luna the house and property as inheritance for his wife (Juana Angela Salazar.) A Spanish official decided to honor Antonio de Salazar's will and divided the property equally.


I am related to Antonio de Salazar twice - both times he turns out to be my 7th great grandfather. First, through his son Francisco Pablo de Salazar (sometimes known as Francisco Antonio Salazar) and Pedro Francisco's wife Maria Manuela Tafoya. Second, through Antonio's daughter Juana Angela Salazar and her husband Joaquin de Luna! Therefore, I am related to the plaintiff and defendant of this suit!

Here is another transcription I did from the 1885 Census. This is of Jose Crespin Torres and his family. The record shows him simply as C. Torres, but I know that it is him based on the family information.

Cousin writes about genealogy ... and her iPhone

My cousin Maurine Pool, a reporter for the Orange County Register, wrote a short article about using her iPhone at a recent reunion - the Torres Family Reunion, to be specific. It's a great article because it often mentions the actual street that these family members lived.

U.S. Census



While we're filling out 2010 census forms, let's take a moment to look back at our Torres Family relatives in 1930. That's the most recent U.S. Census data available for viewing. The public will get access to the 1940 census in April 2012, which is exactly 72 years from the official census date (to protect individuals' privacy -- although many people live long past age 72). See who lived where then:

• Ignacio Torres lived in Socorro with his wife Andreita and children Jose, Teresita, Margaret and Anastacio. Also in the household was his stepdaughter Manuelita and her husband Pantaleon and their two daughters. On top of that, Ignacio's household included wife Andreita's first mother-in-law Juana Marquez and Juana's grown daughter Nestora.
• Guadalupe Olguin and her husband Tomas lived in Val Verde, Socorro County with children Tersila, Rosela, Jose de la Cruz and Crespiniano.
• Dolores Stapleton and her husband Vivian Stapleton lived on Mt. Carmel Avenue in Socorro, three doors down from her brother Rogerio.
• Rogerio and his wife Clara lived on Mt. Carmel Avenue with Annie, Rogerio, Clara, Frances, Della, and another daughter, who is still living.
• Jose Torres and his wife Josefa live on Anna Street in Fresno, California, with their five children, three of whom are still living. Also living in the home was Jose's stepson Benny and his wife Monica.
• Apolonio Torres and his wife Aurora lived on San Pedro Street in Los Angeles with children Luis, John, Nestor, Josephine and Clarence. Son Max and his wife Rita lived nearby.
• Living on Vallejo Street in Los Angeles were widow Domitila Sanchez with her sons Henry, Crespin, Joe and Joe's wife and son. Also living there that April was her father, Crespin Torres, 82. (See previous post). Other grown children of Domitila's lived in New Mexico.
• Juan Jose Montoya, the only survivor of Monica Montoya, was living in Tucson, Arizona on Contzen Street with his wife Sara and three sons, two of whom are living.

Note: Incorrect census spellings have been corrected for this post.

Crespin Torres in Los Angeles, California - 1930

My cousin Maurine once told me that there was a 1930 census record of my 2nd great-grandfather Crespin Torres living in California. At the time, he was living with his daughter, Domitila Sanchez. Today, Maurine posted on the Torres Family NM Genealogy and History Blog an image of that census record. Indeed, Crespin was living with his daughter's family at that time in Los Angeles, California. The Torres Family NM Genealogy and History Blog

My cousin Maurine Pool of California created a new blog called the Torres Family NM Genealogy and History Blog. The first posting on her blog are about Crespin and Andrieta Torres' families that come directly from my own blog. Yesterday, she posted a good article about her own family titled Jose and Josie Torres.

If you follow my blog, and you are interested in this New Mexico Torres family that now hails from California, you may wish to follow her blog, too. Much of the information that I used for my own genealogy of the Torres family comes from her research that she began a couple of decades ago. Her posts should be interesting.
