Gonzales and Montoya Marriage Reveals Complex Relationship

On September 27, 1845, Jose Sebastian Gonzales married Maria Victoriana Montoya in the San Miguel Mission, Socorro, New Mexico. He was the legitimate son of (Jose) Manuel Gonzales and Margarita Montoya; she was the legitimate daughter of (Jose) Bauptista Montoya and Mariana (or Maria Antonia) Garcia. The screen shots of two separate pages in the San Miguel Mission marriage book shown below is the record of their marriage. 1. 

Recently, I found that the ThruLines (tm) program in Ancestry.com misidentified Maria Victoriana's parantage. It suggested that she was the daughter of Juan Montoya, my ancestor. However, she is actually the daughter of his brother Juan Bautista Montoya.

My ancestor Juan Montoya was married to Maria Manuela Garcia Jurado (among others.) He was the son of Antonio Montoya and Maria Guadalupe Salazar; she was the daughter of Francisco Xavier Garcia and Maria Josefa Sanchez. 2. 

On the other hand, Victoriana's parents are siblings of Juan Montoya and Maria Manuela Garcia Jurado. Juan Bautista Montoya was the son of Antonio Montoya and Maria Guadalupe Salazar. Mariana (or Maria Antonia) Garcia was the daughter of Francisco Xavier Garcia Jurado and Maria Josefa Sanchez. 3. In other words, two Montoya brothers with similar names married two Garcia Jurado sisters with similar names. 

As further proof, below are two separate census records from Socorro for the different families. Please note that Victoriana is listed in the Bautista Montoya family:

Above is the image of my 4th great-grandparents marriage record. The record indicates that Francisco Antonio Garcia, 27 years old (single), was the son of Francisco Gabien (Xavier) Garcia, dead, and Maria Josefa Sanches, also dead. He married Maria Guadalupe Torres, 13 years old (single), the daughter of Santigo Torres and Maria Barbara Ortis, who were living in Socorro. The padrinos (best man and matron of honor) were Jose Antonio Baca* and Maria Manuela Barreras. The witnesses were Antonio de Jesus Marques, Jose Rafael Lopes, and Diego Antonio Belesques. Zimmerly Family Marriages in Socorro newspapers

In the early 1900s, four of Samuel Zimmerly and Maria Pabla Torres' children were married. All four were announced in Socorro newspapers. Although Samuel Zimmerly was not alive to see any of his children marry, his wife, Pabla (Torres) Zimmerly attended each of her children's weddings.

Two announcements are not shown here: those for Juan Jose Zimmerly and Maria Gertrudis Zimmerly. Both were married before the turn of the century.

The March 3, 1900 issue of "The Chieftain" had this notice:

Married, at the Catholic church of this city on Monday, February 26, Ricardo M. Zimmerly and
Miss Eloise Stackpole, both of Socorro. There was a large attendance at the reception which followed the wedding ceremony, also at the ball in the evening. The happy couple were the recipients of many presents from friends who thus expressed their good wishes. 

The March 29, 1902 issue of "The Socorro Chieftain" had an announcement for Ricardo Abeyta and Maria Dolores (a.k.a."Lola") Zimmerly.  

 Prospective Wedding.

It is announced that Ricardo Abeyta, nominee for city treasurer, will on Monday lead to the matrimonial altar Miss Lola Zimmerly, also of this city. The happy pair will start upon their journey of married life with the good wishes of a large circle of relatives and friends.

In the same issue "The Socorro Chieftain" published a slate of Republican Party candidates. Ricardo Abeyta is listed as the candidate for City Treasurer. Ricardo's brothers Seferino and Abran are also on the slate, running for the Board of Education and Alderman respectively.

 

The April 5, 1902 issue had an announcement about one couple that attended to the wedding:

Mr. and Mrs. Victor Sais of Casa Colorada were in the city Monday to attend the Abeyta-Zimmerly
nuptials

The June 2, 1906 issue had an announcement of the Miera/Zimmerly wedding. The wedding reception occurred at the house of the bride's mother.

On last Monday young Estanislao Miera from San Antonio surrendered his heart to beautiful Miss Teresita Zimmerly of this town, being united in the holy bonds of wedlock by Rev. Ph. Martin at Saint Michael's church. After a bountiful repast at Mrs. Zimmerly's, with many relatives and friends, the happy couple left for San Antonio where they will make their future home.

Lastly, on April 18, 1908, the newspaper had this announcement for my great-grandparent's wedding:

Zimmerly Torres.
There will be a notable wedding in Socorro next Wednesday morning. invitations as follows: "Yourself and family are respectfully invited to attend the wedding of our children, Delfina Torres and Estevan Zimmerly, which will be celebrated the 22nd of April, A. D. 1908, 7 a.m. at the
Catholic church of San Miguel in Socorro, N. M., and from there to a refreshment at the house of J. E. Torres, and the same night to ball which will be given at the Garcia opera house.

A bunch of photos of my parent's wedding

My aunt Judy gave me a copy of my parent's wedding film on DVD. I decided to do some screen shots of the video and I post them on Facebook. Here is the link to those photos.

I decided to post the screen shots rather than the video itself because it allows for us to look at photos of individuals. I do not know who many of the people pictured in the photos are, or sometimes if I just made a guess. From this record, we know that Santiago Baca and Pauline Zimmerly were married on 13(?) February 1932. Their parents were, respectively, Rafael Baca and Josefita Padilla, and Steve Zimmerly and Adelfina Torres. The best man and matron of honor were J. Torres and Lucie Torres, who were probably a cousins of the bride.

Wedding: Santiago and Paublita (Zimmerly) Baca

Below is a photo from my maternal grandparent's wedding. Santiago Baca and Paublita Zimmerly were married on 13 February 1932 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Santiago was 24 and Paublita was 22 years old at the time.

My grandparents are the couple in the middle. The best man and matron of honor were J. Torres and Lucie Torres. J. Torres was probably a cousin of the bride.

My Parents' Marriage Record

I found my parents' marriage record on the Archives of the Archdiocese of Santa Fe microfilm roll # 16997. It was on page 26 of a book titled "Liber Matrimonium". The marriage was recorded in Latin, as was the custom at that time for Catholic churches. Below is the two page entry for that marriage. (Click on the images below to get a larger view.)

Robert C. Baca and Frances R. Baca were married on 27 October 1954 at the San Miguel Parish in Socorro, New Mexico. Robert's parents were Robert Baca and Teresa Torres:

Frances' parents were Santiago Baca and Paulina Baca. Ernest Manning and Ida Manning were their witnesses. Fr. Louis Antlitz officiated the wedding.

Another Picture from My Mom and Dad's Wedding

Below is another photo from my mom and dad's wedding. My great uncle Albert Zimmerly lent me this photo to scan.

Wedding of Esteban Zimmerly and Delfina Torres

On April 22, 1908, Esteban Zimmerly, the son of Samuel and Maria Paubla (Torres) Zimmerly married Delfina Torres, the daughter of Jose Epitacio and Maria Guadalupe (Padilla) Torres in the San Miguel Parish, Socorro, New Mexico. Esteban and Delfina were my maternal grandmother's parents.

This picture was taken on the wedding day. It was sent to me a few years ago by a distant cousin who is descended from Delfina's sister Josefita Torres. Josefita would later marry Herminio Aragon.

All of the children pictured are the sons and daughters of my 2nd great grandparents Jose Epitacio and Maria Torres. According to my cousin, the people in the picture are as follows:

Dunn / Poole marriage record

I am now looking for the Carroll Livingston Dunn and Viola Fern Poole's marriage record. The information I have is that they were married on 30 November 1930 in Monticello, Illinois. Monticello is in Piatt County; therefore I sent an email today to the Piatt County Historical and Genealogical Society. I'll post on this site if I receive a response from them.

Twice I tried to send an email to the historical society, but it bounced back both times. I will have to send a snail mail to them instead.

Miss Baca Becomes Bride in Socorro Church Rites

Socorro, N.M. – Miss Frances Rosaline Baca, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Santiago Baca, became the bride of Robert C. Baca, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert B. Baca, in ceremonies Wednesday in San Miguel Catholic Church here.

Bridal attendants wee Mrs. Ernest Manning, matron of honor; and Miss Josie Baca, sister of the bride, Miss Lugi Romero, Miss Lucy Gonzales and Miss Theresa Baca, sister of the bridegroom, bridesmaids.

Mr. Manning was best man, Ina Mae Zimmerly was flower girl, and Eddie Bernal was ring bearer.

Both the bride and the bridegroom were graduated from Socorro High School. The bride has been employed by her father, and the bridegroom is stationed with the Army in New York.

Among the pre-nuptial courtesies honoring the bride were a lingerie shower given by Mrs. Jimmie Baca and a miscellaneous shower which Miss Gonzales and Miss Romero were hostesses.

Historic San Miguel Church is Scene of Socorro Wedding

SOCORRO – Historic San Miguel Church was the scene of the wedding of Miss Frances Baca, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Santiago Baca, and Pfc. Robert Baca, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert B. Baca. The fashionable wedding united two prominent Socorro families.

Rev. Louis Antlitz officiated at the double ring ceremony. The four bridesmaids were Misses Josie Baca, sister of the bride, Lucy Gonzales, Lugy Romero and Theresa Baca, the groom’s sister. Mrs. Ernest Lee Manning of Albuquerque, the bride’s aunt, was matron of honor and the bride’s small cousin, Ina Mae Zimmerly was flower girl. Little Eddie Bernal was ring-bearer. Ernest Lee Manning was best man and the four ushers were David Baca, brother of the groom, Robert Navarez, Navario Lopez and Ernest Chavez.

Mrs. Carl Dagostino sang accompanied by Mrs. Philip Baca, organist.

The bride wore a gown of imported Chantilly lace over blush pink bridal satin. Matching blush silk illusion veil was held by a jeweled crown of floral design. She carried a white orchid and carnation bouquet.

The matron of honor wore a waltz length iridescent taffeta gown of deep rose. The four bridesmaids were attired in identically designed waltz length gowns of taffeta in soft tones of blue, rose, turquoise, and green.

The bride’s mother was attired in a two-piece costume of ice blue starched lace with black and white accessories. Her corsage was pink carnations. Mrs. Robert B. Baca, the groom’s mother, wore rust wool jersey with black accessories and a yellow carnation corsage.

A reception was held in the ballroom of the Hotel Val Verde. Those who poured wee Miss Priscilla Baca, Mrs. Lorenzo Baca, Mrs. Paul Padilla, and Mrs. Pete Romero. Mrs. Sylvestra Zimmerly was in charge of the guest book. Misses Christine Pino, Eugenia Baca and Mrs. Howard McConeghey sang.

A wedding dinner was served.
